"It was kind of you lose something and you gain something so I could read exactly what happened in the 1950s," she said. Unfortunately, by that time the people who could've told Mohamed what happened, had died.īut luckily the archives, which had records previously sealed about Mr Mattan's case, had just been opened. "But it was only in 2015, that I really kind of pushed my other work aside and decided to really find out more about Mahmood Mattan," she said. She has described Tiger Bay as one of the places where multiculturalism was pioneered. The discoveries led Mohamed to become interested in the Somali diaspora in Cardiff's Tiger Bay, which is among the oldest Somali communities outside of Africa. "And then their lives had kind of gone in these two very different directions," she said. The story of Mr Mattan struck Mohamed, who later found out her father and Mr Mattan had known each other during the late 1940s and early 50s. Nadifa Mohamed has previously described the setting of her novel, Cardiff's Tiger Bay as one of the places where multiculturalism was pioneered.
