Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon6/25/2023 And the answer to that is a thudding “No.”įor my credentials, I do not suffer from SCID, like the book’s protagonist Maddy does. I’m reviewing it from a lens of whether it was a positive, realistic portrayal of disability. While books portraying the struggles of biracial characters are important, sometimes it’s nice to read about a character whose heritage isn’t glossed over, but is also not the main focus of the narrative.īut I’m not reviewing the book from the lens of whether the book was an enjoyable read or the characters were likable or even whether it was a positive portrayal of a biracial protagonist. It portrayed a biracial heroine whose race is incidental-her parents were just nice people who met, fell in love, married, and had children, though her father and brother were tragically killed when she was just a baby. It portrayed likable people being likable among nice illustrations and some clever framing devices like school assignments on kissing.

The dancing wooly masters6/24/2023 one sees that we are in fact only dancing with our own consciousness. The Dancing Wu Li Masters remains an engaging, accessible way to meet the most profound and mind-altering insights of 20th-century science. known being The Dancing Wu Li Masters written by a non-physicist, Gary Zukav. Even as these theories age they haven't percolated all that far into the collective consciousness they're too far removed from mundane human experience not to need introduction. The "new physics" of Zukav's 1979 book comprises quantum theory, particle physics, and relativity. Some physicists even believe that, but the Wu Li Masters know that they are only dancing with it. One day a woman asked one of my coworkers for 'The Dancing Woolly Masters' instead of the Dancing Wu Li Masters. Fans would come in looking for his first book, an analysis of the New Physics and much different than his Oprah bestsellers. Most people believe that physicists are explaining the world. Gary Zukav was the darling of the Oprah set with his Soul Stories book. This book deals not with knowledge, which is always past tense anyway, but with imagination, which is physics come alive, which is Wu Li. The Wu Li Master always begins at the center, the heart of the matter. The Wu Li Master does not teach, but the student learns. The Wu Li Master dances with his student. At an Esalen Institute meeting in 1976, tai chi master Al Huang said that the Chinese word for physics is Wu Li, "patterns of organic energy." Journalist Gary Zukav and the others present developed the idea of physics as the dance of the Wu Li Masters-the teachers of physical essence.

Sleeping murder6/24/2023 Her stepmother, Helen Halliday née Kennedy, met her father travelling from India back to England, where their shipboard romance led to marriage upon arrival in England. Miss Marple suggests that Gwenda lived in England with her father and his second wife, which proves to be the case. She has memories of being on a ship, but it is clearly two ships. Her father died a few years after her mother. Gwenda was born in India where her father was stationed, then raised in New Zealand by her mother’s sister from a toddler, once her mother died. During the play, The Duchess of Malfi, when the line “Cover her face mine eyes dazzle she died young” is spoken, Gwenda screams out she saw an image of herself viewing a man saying those words strangling a blonde-haired woman named Helen. She goes to London for a visit with relatives, the author Raymond West, his wife, and his aunt, Miss Jane Marple. Further, a place that seems logical to her for a doorway between two rooms proves to have been one years earlier. When the workmen open a long sealed door, she sees the very wallpaper that was in her mind. She forms a definite idea for the little nursery. She supervises workers in a renovation, staying in a one-time nursery room while the work progresses. In a short time, she finds and buys Hillside, a large old house that feels just like home. Newlywed Gwenda Reed travels ahead of her husband to find a home for them on the south coast of England.

Greta lives with her friend Sabine in an ancient Dutch farmhouse in Hudson, New York. When they accidentally meet in real life, an explosive affair ensues. A brilliantly original and funny novel about a sex therapist’s transcriptionist who falls in love with a client while listening to her sessions.

Utopia for realists review6/23/2023 Aside from that, most of the advice seems to be "keep on bringing these issues up, their time will come." The book also briefly covers such topics as biases and how difficult it is to push truly progressive ideas forward in the face of those biases. The author wails a bit about how progressives are stuck trying to protect the status quo instead of pushing forward truly progressive ideals such as these. The history is particularly interesting, as before this I had no idea how close the US came to implementing something like UBI in the middle of the last century.Īs I said, there's very little concrete suggestions as to how to get there though. But the book covers that and more, providing a history of those ideas and what was tried before and why they failed and why we aren't there yet. The book covers a number of "utopian" scenarios worth striving for, namely:Įven before reading a book, I was already a believer in these ideals, well aware of the justifications. Still, in this world of ever-increasing bad news and crises, the optimism of this book is a welcome respite. Summary: I really like this book, though I think it falls short in providing concrete steps for how to get from where we are to the idealized utopia he presents. The full title is "Utopia for Realists: How We Can Build the Ideal World". I forget where I got this book recommendation from, but it did go on sale for Kindle a while back so I got a copy. |
